About Me

My first photography "job" was photographing Soviet spies. I was serving in the US Coast Guard on an icebreaker in the Bering Sea. The Soviets sent fishing fleets into the sea and amidst these fleets were KGB trawlers spying on US military installations along the Alaskan Coast and Aleutian Islands. This was in the days of film. I developed the film and printed over 7,500 images of Soviet ships in the two years I was the ship's photographer.

After the Coast Guard, it was college, a 35-year career as a firefighter. There was another 5 years as a Disaster Management advisor including one year working in Southeast Asia with USAID. Finally, I retired and renewed my interest in photography.

I never approach a photography project "thinking that I know" how I am going to shoot it hoping that I will find the image. 

Instead I start from "knowing that I do not know". This allows me to be open to all possibilities and let the image find me.
